2026 SBSUM Parent Kick-Off

7th and 8th grades are pivotal! Students begin to transition to differing specialized teachers for each and every course. Independence is gained as they learn to navigate their assignments and activities with more executive function. Parents are vital to this time in helping to shape the students' worldview and guide/inform their at-home work habits. Come learn some tips and stategies to setting your student up for success.

Students in Rhetoric school learn to speak and write, no longer simply digesting the information, but expressing themselves eloquently. In this session we will discuss how to engage at home with children in the mature teen years and how to intentionally help challenge and shape their convictions and the skills to express them. ​Video Recording​​​

This session is a thorough review of third grade curriculum and how to navigate your lesson plan and materials at home. Parents are encouraged to attend even if they have taught a child enrolled at SBSUM in this grade level in the past, as currciculum is enhanced and revised every year. ​Video Recording​​​

The valuation of truth, beauty, and goodness in all things is trained first at home and there are many strategies parents can use to incorporate this viewpoint into every day life. Additionally, changing our expectations of of children as they transition through the Trivium phases of Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric can impact our parenting efforts as they grow and mature. Come and learn how to bring classical education into all things as we raise our chidren in the admonition of the Lord.

This session is designed to bring you in the loop as parent partners in the Saxon phase of our mathematics curriculum here at SBSUM. The transition from conceptual to procedual math is a big change for your students, but with the right guidelines, the tools they have been equipped with in Rightstart will begin to look more polished as they are tasked with demonstrating the mental math they have been performing since Pre-K in a more logical manner. Your role as a parent will begin to shift from an mathematics instructor to a format trainer, guiding them in important concepts like proper headings, boxed answers, and labelled units. These guidelines will seem trivial to your student at first, but homework legibility is pivotal in pre-algebra all the way through advanced calculus and statistics. ​Video Recording​​​
